HelloHealth Team Member Spotlight—Carmen Mohan

Last month we introduced you to HelloHealth Chief Relationship Officer Meagan Davies. It seems only fitting this month to turn our sights on HelloHealth’s founder, Dr. Carmen Mohan, or “Dr. Carmen” to the many who have benefitted from knowing her in a professional capacity.

Dr. Carmen Mohan is a Harvard-trained medical doctor who spent the first years of her medical career at Emory University’s Department of Medicine as part of their faculty. It was really here that her journey to founding HelloHealth began. Dr. Carmen had the privilege of developing and administering a priority-access clinic for the employees and staff of Grady Memorial Hospital, a level-one trauma center in Atlanta, Georgia. These highly trained, mission-driven personnel quickly made her realize that she needed to be more than just a doctor. She needed to be a healer. Those she treated needed more than just basic medical care; they needed somebody who could address healthy living practices, mental and emotional needs, as well as their physical needs. It stirred something in her, and she shifted her focus to becoming a hospitalist.

While working as a hospitalist, she witnessed even more the fact that hard-working, career-driven professionals were experiencing severe issues, many of which could have been eliminated with preventative medicine. Dr. Carmen continued to work and treat patients, such as a woman who was admitted to the hospital due to suffering a heart attack. Ultimately, the medical team couldn’t save her, and the memory stuck with Dr. Carmen. “She was the kind of woman who would have kept my young children from crossing the street when cars were coming by. I felt the undeniable feeling that I could have saved her if I had been her doctor five years before we met,” she says. Feeling increasingly frustrated at the constraints of traditional medicine, Dr. Carmen began searching for a way she could bring her healing talents together with her medical skills to create the holistic treatment option she envisioned. In the fall of 2018, Carmen had chance encounters with five different women—all experts in their fields—who asked Carmen if she could be their doctor. Their inquiries finally gave her the push she needed to launch a concierge medical practice with women in leadership positions as the focus.

Did you know that health problems slow down women about 10 years earlier than they do men? It’s easy to put health needs aside in one’s 20s and 30s while establishing a career, but Dr. Carmen says, “At the time our career trajectories are at our steepest, that’s when we very commonly suffer from dips in our personal energy levels that are physiologically mediated.” HelloHealth understands that women suffer “unprecedented levels of stress” in the workplace because they are “working harder and longer and with more discipline.” HelloHealth strives to bring a balanced approach to health care—at the point where career-driven women need it. It becomes the place where healing occurs.

Dr. Carmen is proud of the programs HelloHealth has developed. From the Reimagine Lunch series, which “gives everyone permission to stop for lunch” and participate in a series of “mini workshops,” to the health coaching, wellness checks, and mental health resources, HelloHealth’s role as a whole-person care provider is something Dr. Carmen takes seriously. Her favorite program right now might be providing full wellness content that is customized to a team’s or an individual’s specific needs. It’s that ability to establish trust and be fully present in the health partner relationship that she envisioned creating.

Since launching in 2018, HelloHealth has seen consistent growth, something Dr. Carmen takes pride in. “People just didn’t believe that a medical practice like HelloHealth was possible,” she says. Not only is it possible, but it has also become an essential for many. One corporate client stated that HelloHealth’s services are considered the number-one benefit they offer according to their employees, ranking higher than even retirement and vacation incentives. Those results happen because Dr. Carmen and her team work hard to provide what medicine should be. “We haven’t innovated anything new,” she says. “Americans have been searching for a better way in medicine and in relationship with their doctors for a long time. We are experts on the human body, and we hold the best interests of those we serve at heart.”

These principles are also something that those at HelloHealth practice themselves. Dr. Carmen is an avid runner, who finds that running not only promotes a physically healthy body but helps her maintain her mental and emotional health as well. “I find peace and meditation in running,” she says. That might not be the case for someone else, but Dr. Carmen and her team are committed to helping everyone they treat find and maintain their healthy practices. “That’s the magic for me in medicine,” Dr. Carmen says. Finding the little ways to help individuals achieve personal goals is why HelloHealth exists. As someone who practices what she preaches, Dr. Carmen set her own mini-health goal this year: to run 2,021 miles for 2021.
