The Joy of Thriving While Black
An interview with Charisse M. Williams, Certified Leadership Coach, Speaker, and Author
In this episode of “HelloHealth Today,” Dr. Carmen Mohan sits down with her guest, Charisse M. Williams. What does it mean to have a growth mindset? To thrive? To find joy in life? As a certified leadership coach, speaker, and author, Charisse helps people navigate major life transitions, cultivate joy, and manage the stress in their life.
Charisse reflects on what led her to write her book, “The Joy of Thriving While Black,” just after she launched her leadership coaching practice early last year. With the pandemic in the backdrop, the powerful social justice moments of 2020 gave rise to equally powerful hashtags in social media, such as #blackjoymatters. With a career rooted in social justice, Charisse explored the people behind the hashtags and uncovered a wealth of stories she wanted to share about black people thriving and finding their joy. And so began the beginning of a book.
When interviewing people for her book, she always asked, “What does it mean to you to thrive?” Listen to learn how thriving is a combination of self-care and community. Also find out how Charisse’s personal journey with self-care was informed by her past career experience as a lawyer focused on human rights, education equity, and criminal and juvenile justice issues. In this culture of pushing forward and working harder, Charisse experienced a personal health injury that led her to rethink how she was taking care of herself. She discusses with Dr. Mohan how to thrive, even if there are actual forces against you. Charisse also shares her own self-care routine, with an emphasis on the importance of rest, resilience, and recovery in a world that pushes back against those key elements.
Dr. Mohan returns to “The Joy of Thriving While Black” to close out their discussion. Charisse reveals the philosophies behind her book and the discoveries she made through the process. She views her book as an opportunity to help others, to change their mindset, to build resilience, to have joy, and to rest.
