7 Healthy Habits at Work
Healthy work habits are essential for anyone who wants to succeed at a job. When we are using healthy tools, we increase our productivity, obtain job satisfaction, and have better relationships with our colleagues and boss.
The hard part of these habits is the process of making them habits. Below we offer seven healthy practices you can integrate into your workday. And to make them habits, we suggest you set an alarm and intentionally incorporate these tips every hour throughout your time at work.
Positioning. Improve your office workstation to avoid neck pain, support your arms, and guard your posture. Proper positioning should help you protect and rest your eyes and avoid reaching too often.
Exercise. Stop and do a few exercises at your computer, like rolling your wrists and shoulders or stretching your neck.
Healthy snacks. Eat healthy snacks during the day, but don’t set them out on your desk until you’re ready for snack time. If you leave them out, you tempt yourself to eat more calories in a day than needed. Set a time and a quantity to eat for snack time.
Hydration. Make sure to stay hydrated by drinking water. Try to eliminate caffeinated drinks after 2 p.m.
Mental breaks. Take mental breaks. Don’t run yourself down by working on the same task for hours. This break doesn’t mean jump on social media. Instead, stop and walk away from your workstation. All that work will still be there when you return in 10 minutes.
Avoid eye strain. Research suggests keeping your computer screen about an arm’s length away. If you can’t read your screen or find yourself squinting, simply increase the font size.
Walk. Lunch time is a great time to get outside and walk for 10 minutes. Not only are you burning calories, but you are also de-stressing and refreshing yourself! Find an accountability partner (whether in person or virtually) and walk together. Too cold outside? Walk the halls and stairs of your workplace.
The most important party of healthy habits in the workplace is being aware and making time. Taking care of your physical well-being allows your mental well-being to function at top performance levels.
