An Interview with Vonage’s Vice President, Legal Counsel, Shenia Kirkland

“I am my ancestors’ wildest dreams.” In Episode 2, Dr. Carmen Mohan chats with Vonage Vice President, Legal Counsel, and Co-Chair of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Advisory Board Shenia Kirkland. A lawyer with over 20 years of experience, Ms. Kirkland has made a career of being a corporate in-house counsel attorney, assisting companies and corporations to grow and thrive. In her successful career, Ms. Kirkland has developed a leadership style that empowers those around her to take on additional responsibility, fostering confidence and success among those she oversees. In the podcast episode, Dr. Mohan and Ms. Kirkland explore the leadership lessons and applications Ms. Kirkland has developed and discuss why they work

Being in a position of leadership that allows her to set others up for success, or as she calls it “developing the pipeline,” has been one of Ms. Kirkland’s long-term career goals, and she is thrilled to be in a position not only to help others, but also to empower the next generation of strong, capable leaders. Her unique leadership style has evolved to provide lessons that we can allow incorporate into our own lives, whether personal or professional. Listen along as Dr. Mohan and Ms. Kirkland discuss how she has developed her leadership style, what advice she has for others, and why leaning into the uncomfortable is where the most growth and value can be found.

Action Steps:

  1. Copy and place the following in a place you will see it every day. Say it to yourself every morning: “I am strong. I am confident. I am powerful. I am abundant. I am brave. I am grateful. I am enough.”

  2. Make a list of your accomplishments every quarter. Reflect on your successes and learn to value yourself and your contributions.

  3. Practice meditation. Find your time of day and reflect on what you’re grateful for, what you’re intentionally letting go of that day, and what you’re intentionally letting in. Practice giving yourself grace.

  4. Find your mantra. For Ms. Kirkland, it is “I am my ancestors’ wildest dreams.” It reminds her that her ancestors survived the Middle Passage and long journeys to freedom. If they can do that, she can face and overcome whatever she is facing.
