Bee the Change You Want to See
An interview with Representative Bee Nguyen, Candidate for Secretary of State.
In this episode of “HelloHealth Today,” we continue the “Women at the Helm” series with State Representative Bee Nguyen. Rep. Bee made history when she was elected to Georgia House District 89, the seat formerly held by Stacy Abrams. Dr. Mohan and Rep. Bee sit down for a conversation about being the change you want to see and what drives Rep. Bee to run to be Georgia’s next Secretary of State.
Dr. Mohan opens the conversation when asking Rep. Bee about her decision to step up and run to be Georgia’s next Secretary of State. Rep. Bee discusses her journey and her childhood influences that brought her to her to where she is today. Then, Dr. Mohan and Rep. Bee discuss into the non-profit Rep. Bee started and how emerging herself into education shaped her decision to run for office.
Dr. Mohan and Rep. Bee continue the discussion by diving into important issues Rep. Bee is tackling. They start by addressing the recent crimes against the Asian-American community, the effect it has on the entire community, and Rep. Bee herself, being the first Asian-American elected to the Georgia General Assembly. Rep. Bee advocates for the Asian community, especially immigration issues. Dr. Mohan and Rep. Bee go deeper into immigration when Rep. Bee gives her family history, specifically discussing her family journey to the United States and her personal journey, being a 2nd generation immigrant. Rep. Bee recognizes the sacrifice and the incredible journey her family made for the “American Dream,” and how she honors her family’s sacrifice.
They continue by discussing the important issues Rep. Bee is tackling and has tackled, while she has been in office, specifically voting rights. Rep. Bee discusses why voting rights are so important, especially in Georgia. Dr. Mohan and Rep. Bee discuss systemic racism, how that relates to voting rights and what we can do to overcome these obstacles.
Dr. Mohan continues by asking Rep. Bee about her decision to run for Secretary of State. They discuss the challenges Rep. Bee faces during her campaign, what drives her to run and be in politics, the stress that comes along with a campaign, and the major precautions she had to take in order to keep herself, her employees, and her loved ones safe.
Finally, Dr. Mohan asks Rep. Bee how we can help Asian women and women in general engage in political campaigns. Rep. Bee discusses fundraising, standards of electability, and reaching out to those that have been there.
